Long Island Plastic Surgery

Information and Frequently Asked Questions
Every year, over 14.6 MILLION cosmetic surgery procedures take place, and it’s one of the most common procedures that take place in America.
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (We’ll talk more about this later!) performed a study on this topic. In 2013, the most common plastic surgery that was performed was breast augmentation, with nose reshaping, eyelid surgery, liposuction and face lifts rounding out the top five.
Eyelid surgeries and face lifts both rose by 6 percent from 2012, while the number of nose reshaping procedures and liposuction surgeries declined.
What should you look for in a quality Surgeon?

Board Certification:  When choosing a plastic surgeon, you will want to select one who has been board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Plastic surgeons who are certified by the ABPS have the necessary training and are uniquely qualified to handle any concerns you may have.

They have the best track record, as it relates to patient care and low complication rates. Every plastic surgeon you consult with is going to claim to have a board certification. It is up to you to make sure that they received their certification from the American Board of Plastic Surgery, as opposed to a lesser board.

Plastic surgeons who’ve received an ABPS certification have a degree from an accredited medical institution, have completed three years of general surgery, have completed at least two years of a supervised residency and have practiced professionally for two years. You can check with the American Board of Medical Specialties to ensure your plastic surgeon’s credentials.

Track Record:     Look up the medical board in your state. If there have been any disciplinary actions taken against the surgeon, they will have this information recorded. Certain states may allow you to view this information online, whole others require prospective patients to fill out and mail in a request. Be sure to check for settlements, as well as their license to practice within your state.

Ask About Hospital Privileges:   A plastic surgeon who has been found guilty of wrongdoing will typically have their hospital privileges revoked. This should be considered a major red flag and serve as a signal for you to continue your search elsewhere. Don’t choose a plastic surgeon who is only allowed to perform surgery in an outpatient setting.

Who Gets Plastic Surgery Most Often?

The statistics might surprise you. While most would guess that it is mostly older people who are also upper class, more than half make less than $60,000 each year and are also under 50 years old. These numbers are derived from a study that was performed by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

There is no typical plastic surgery patients, as they come from all different backgrounds. Those who have imperfections that have bothered them for a long time often seek plastic surgery and while some receive plastic surgery for cosmetic purposes, others receive these procedures to boost their career prospects.
